A blender and a freezer are all you need to preserve Apple Pear Freezer Jam. Freezer jam is a great beginning preservation method because it requires little time and minimal equipment. It also has the added benefit of having less sugar in it than traditional jams and jellies. The only downside to making freezer jam is that you need to have freezer space. Many times freezer space is at a premium in our house so I generally can my jam instead. We have many canning posts if you find yourself in my situation, but if you do have some space in the corner of your freezer, then keep reading and perhaps this recipe will become one of your favorites.
Freezer Jam keeps well in the freezer for months. This apple pear freezer jam is perfect on toast or bagels. One of the benefits of freezer jam is that it retains the fresh fruit taste much better than canned jam. In the middle of winter, that fresh fruit flavor is much appreciated.
4 cups of chopped, peeled, cored apples
4 cups of chopped, peeled, cored pears
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup water
5 tbsp Instant Pectin
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon allspice
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
Cooking and Canning Apple Pear Freezer Jam:
Wash, core, peel, and chop apples and pears.
Cook in water until soft. Then, blend the fruit until it is nice and smooth, and measure out 4 cups of blended fruit.
Stir sugar and pectin together in a large bowl until well-blended. Set aside.
Blend the rest of the ingredients in with the measured fruit. Add in the sugar/pectin mixture and blend well.
Pour jam mixture into plastic freezer containers, leaving a ½ inch headspace.
Let jam stand for 30 minutes to thicken. Label and freeze.
