How to Increase in Crochet

Learn how to crochet an increase. In this case, when you increase in crochet, you are placing two stitches in the same base stitch. Obviously, this is a great way to adjust the size of your fabric and is used extensively in crochet patterns. This is a technique that I use as I make my dragons and other fanciful crochet creations. Knowing the different crochet stitches opens up a whole world of options where you are only limited by your imagination.


Below are the directions for a small sample project like we have in the video.

  1. Use your yarn to make a chain of 11 chain stitches (ch 11). The first 10 chain stitches make your foundation chain; the last 1 is your turning chain.

  2. Starting in the second chain from the  hook: make 5 rows of 10 single crochet.

  3. We are going to increase on this next row. Make 2 single crochet in each stitch below. This gives you a total of 20 single crochet.

  4. This last row just allows more room for the stitches to stretch out. Create 20 single crochet. One for each stitch below.
