The holiday season is here, bringing with it the spirit of joy and creativity. What better way to celebrate than by crafting your own Christmas ornaments? Using simple materials like feathers and styrofoam eggs lets you add a personal touch to your tree. This DIY project is not only fun but also a chance to make meaningful memories with family and friends. Let’s explore how to create beautiful feathered ornaments that will make your holiday decor stand out.

Why Choose Feathers and Styrofoam Eggs?

Feathers and styrofoam eggs are great choices for crafting ornaments. They are lightweight, easy to handle, and open up many creative possibilities. For example, feathers come in a range of vibrant colors and textures. You can choose bright reds and greens for a classic look or go with icy blues and whites for a winter wonderland theme. Styrofoam eggs serve as a sturdy base that can be easily transformed into a decorative masterpiece.

By using these materials, you can personalize each ornament to match your unique style. Not only will they be beautiful, but this project also serves as a wonderful bonding experience with your loved ones. In fact, according to surveys, 85% of people find joy in crafting during the holiday season, making it the perfect family activity.

Materials You Will Need

Before you start crafting, gather these materials:

Having everything ready beforehand will make your creative process smoother and more enjoyable.

Step-by-Step Feather tree ornament Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Styrofoam Egg

Person in red shirt draws on a white foam ball with a black marker. A hot glue gun and feathers rest on a speckled countertop.

Take your styrofoam egg and mark the center on the larger end of the egg. I like to mark it a few more times in concentric circles so I have a guide for later.

Step 2: Cut the Feathers and glue the twine

Using scissors, trim your feathers to 2 inches long.

Use the glue gun and the twine to create a bottom for the egg by working in a spiral until you are at the curve of the egg.

Step 3: Glue the Feathers

Start gluing the feathers on the styrofoam egg, beginning at the bottom and working your way up. Overlap the feathers slightly for a polished look. For a faster application, a hot glue gun is ideal. Ensure each feather is pressed down firmly for optimal adhesion. Keep adding feathers until you achieve the coverage you desire.

I usually do 12 feathers on the bottom, 6 in the middle and another 6 on the top.

Before gluing down the top, I glue on my hanger.

Step 4: Add Embellishments

With your feathers placed, it’s time to add some bling. Consider adding a sprinkle of glitter or sequins to catch the light. If you prefer a minimalist style, allow the natural beauty of the feathers to shine through without extra embellishments. I like to add a star bead over the twine hanger. I glue it down with the tips of the feathers going into it.

Step 5: Display Your Ornaments

A festive wreath with pinecones and a white feather ornament hangs on a wooden wall. Snowy accents add a wintery touch.

Once your ornaments are finished, it’s time to hang them on your Christmas tree! They also make charming decorations around your home or thoughtful gifts for friends and family. According to a marketing study, handmade gifts create stronger emotional connections, making these ornaments not just decorations but cherished keepsakes.

Tips for Customization

  • Color Themes: Choose feathers that align with your holiday theme. For instance, pairing traditional red and green with gold accents can provide a rich, festive atmosphere.

  • Personal Touch: Add initials or name tags to personalize each ornament. This small detail transforms your creations into special keepsakes that family members will treasure.

  • Themed Ornaments: Think of creating ornaments inspired by a specific theme, like woodland creatures or holiday symbols. This adds a charming and cohesive look to your Christmas tree.
