This seedling tray design comes from the Mittleider Gardening Course book. This is a method of gardening that was developed in the 1960s and 1970s by Jacob Mittleider. This year I am trying his method. Which includes planting in these seedling trays.
Supplies
3/4″ x 3/4″ x 17″ row marker
1/2″ x 3 1/8″ x 18″ bottom boards (5)
1/2″ x 2 3/4″ x 18″ end boards (2)
1/2″ x 2 3/4″ x 17 1/2″ side boards (2)
measuring tape
miter saw
table saw
pencil
wood glue
pneumatic finishing nailer
1 1/2 inch finishing nails
Seedling Tray Directions
Begin making the seedling tray by gluing and nailing the end boards to the side boards in a square.
Next, attach the bottom boards to the side boards with glue and nails. The bottom boards should be parallel to the end boards. There should be about a 1/4 inch gap between boards for drainage. If any nails have gone wonky and poked out of your wood just nip them and hammer the tips flush to the wood. Check to see if additional nails are needed in those cases for structural support.
This is a relatively easy project to do. Plus, it is better than the plastic trays which crack and tip if you don’t hold them just right.
