These anise-filled cookie strips are so unique with their sweet, fragrant, licorice-like flavor. Between the mix and not having to roll out each cookie individually, they are so easy. You just roll them into two “logs” and cut them diagonally after baking. The diagonal strips look more sophisticated and taste so good. I love this anise seed cookie mix.

My husband loves black licorice so when I found this recipe I thought I would give it a try just for him. I have to admit I am not a big black licorice fan, I will usually pilfer one of his about once every two years and remember why I don’t normally get them for myself. So when I made these cookies and loved them, I was so surprised. It is different than my usual cookies and has such a satisfying flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups flour

  • 1/4 cup walnuts

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup soft butter

  • 1 egg

  • 1 teaspoon anise seed

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

The mix is so easy to make I usually do 6 jars at a time.

First, layer the dry ingredients in the jar in this order: walnuts, flour, anise seed, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and brown sugar. Place jars in a cool, dry place and store them for up to 3 months.

When you are ready to use the mix, combine the contents in a jar and the wet ingredients gradually. First mix together the egg, and butter. Then pour out the sugar and mix it with the wet ingredients. Next, mix in the flour and then the remaining mixture.

Roll into two 15-inch long logs. Place them on a cookie sheet and flatten them slightly.

Bake them at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

Take out when the top is light brown. Cut them diagonally and leave them on the pan to cool.
