With Halloween approaching, crafting your own witch's hat treat bag is a perfect way to get into the spirit of the season. This delightful project is suitable for most skill levels. Not only do you create something whimsical, but you also gain a functional treat bag for gifting candies and goodies. Let's walk through the steps to sew a witch's hat treat bag that is cute and practical!

Witch Hat Materials Needed

Before diving in, collect the following materials:

Having everything arranged ahead of time ensures a smoother sewing experience.

Step 1: Cut the Fabric

Hands cut floral fabric on a stone-textured surface. Text reads: "Cut on fold: 4 1/2 inch x 3 1/2 inch." Bright, detailed scene.
  1. Bag Closure (cut one): Cut on the fold: 4 1/2 inches x 3 1/2 inches.

Hands holding floral-patterned fabric on a speckled surface, with scissors nearby. The fabric is white with pink and green flowers.

When this is unfolded it measures 9 inches x 3 1/2 inches.

  2. Pointy Crown (cut one):

Hands use a ruler and pencil on floral fabric on a speckled surface. Text reads 6 inches from corner.

Along the bottom horizontal edge, measure 6 inches from the corner of the fabric.

Hands marking floral fabric with a pencil and ruler on a granite surface. Text reads: "Stop 1 1/2 inches from edge."

Continue about every 1 inch marking 6 inches from the corner until you get to 1 1/2 inches from the vertical side of the fabric. Measure straight down to the corner from this point and mark it. Go back to the dots you marked earlier and connect them to create your cutting line.

Hands cut floral fabric with scissors on a speckled surface. A clear ruler is nearby. The fabric is green with pink flowers.

Use sharp scissors to cut out the crown.

  3. Brim (cut two): Cut on the fold: Along the bottom horizontal edge, create one mark that will be the center of the brim.

Hands measure floral fabric with a ruler on a speckled surface. Text reads: "On the fold: 3 1/2 inches from center mark."

Then, measure 3 1/2 inches from the center mark. Continue about every 1 inch marking 3 1/2 inches from the center until you form a half circle.

Hands marking floral fabric with a pencil on a granite surface. Text reads: "On the fold: 3/4 inches from center mark."

Next, measure 3/4 inch from the center mark. Continue about every 1/2 inch marking 3/4 inch from the center until you form a small half circle. This will be the center hole in the brim.

Go back to the dots you marked earlier and connect them to create your cutting line.

Use sharp scissors to cut out the brim.

Pay attention to cutting neatly for the best-looking results! Press all the pieces with a hot iron before sewing them together.

Step 3: Assemble the Hat

It’s time to stitch your hat together!

  1. Press and stitch the short sides of the bag closure to 1/4 inch. This will keep the twine from getting caught.

Then, press the long sides to 1/4 inch.

Fold it in half lengthwise with wrong sides together.

Hands handle floral fabric on a granite surface next to scissors. A towel and colorful pattern shirt are visible in the background.

Then stitch it 1/2 inch from the folded edge. This will create the pocket for the twine to go through.

  2. Sew the triangle into a cone shape by aligning the two side edges, right sides together.

Hands guide floral fabric through a sewing machine on a speckled countertop. Blue thread is visible, conveying a mood of focus.

Sew along the seam with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Press the seam open without squishing the cone. Trim the excess seam allowance at the tip of the cone so it won't be so bulky. Turn the piece right side out. I like to use a chopstick to get the point out.

Hands arrange a round, floral-patterned paper on white paper. Yellow scissors rest on a speckled countertop. Sewing machine in the background.
  3. Place the wrong sides of the brims together.

Hands sewing floral fabric on a machine; fabric has a small cutout. Yellow pins are visible. Setting is on a speckled countertop.

Stitch it at 1/4 inch around the outside edge.

Turn it right side out and press it.

Hands guide floral fabric through a sewing machine on a speckled surface, stitching a circular piece with precision.

Stitch around the outside edge of the brim again as close to the edge as you can get.

Person traces a floral fabric cone on paper with a pencil on a speckled countertop, wearing a colorful patterned shirt. No text visible.

Place the cone over the center hole and mark it. It is usually somewhere around 1/4 inch bigger than the hole.

Person cuts a floral fabric circle on a counter with scissors. Text "Cut 8 1/4 inch" visible. Sewing machine in the background.

Snip the inside hole in 8 equal spaces up to the 1/4 inch marks.

Hands pin colorful fabric on a speckled countertop with a sewing machine, scissors, and pencil nearby. The setting feels creative.

You can then insert the crown into the hole and stretch out the brim hole to match the bottom of the crown.

Hands guiding floral fabric under a sewing machine needle, with pins visible. The setting is a sewing station with a granite surface.

Pin it together and stitch it at 1/4 inch seam allowance. Be careful with the floppy part of the brim as it can sometimes get in the way.

  4. Use the open edge of the bag closure to sandwich in the seam from the previous step. Pin it in and then stitch a 3/8 inch seam allowance. (I like to have it start at the back of the hat.)

Step 4: Add the drawstring

Adding a drawstring will make it so the bag can be pulled shut.

  1. Cut a length of ribbon or twine that is about 12 inches long.

Hands sewing a colorful, floral-patterned fabric on a granite countertop. A sewing machine and ruler are visible in the background.
  2. Cover one end of the twine with tape and place a safety pin in it. Then, feed the pin into one end of the bag closure and work it around until it comes out the other side.

  3. Make a knot, but be sure it is long enough that the bag opens well.

Step 5: Personalize Your Treat Bag

Your witch's hat treat bag is finally ready. Now comes the fun part—personalizing it!

Think about adding embellishments like glitter, sequins, flowers, ribbons or other decorations, for a fun touch.
