Crochet

more than a craft—it is a piece of living history, passed from one set of hands to another.

With nothing more than a hook, a strand of yarn, and a little patience, something beautiful begins to take shape. Every stitch carries a little of the person who made it, creating blankets, gifts, keepsakes, and treasures that can be loved for years and passed on to the next generation. Crochet reminds us that the things we make with our hands can become part of the stories we leave behind.

Learning the Basics

Learning the basics of crochet is the beginning of a skill you can carry with you for a lifetime.

Start with the simple stitches and techniques that generations of crocheters have used to turn a strand of yarn into something beautiful and useful. With each stitch, you’ll build confidence, discover the joy of creating with your hands, and learn a timeless craft worth passing on.

Crochet Basics

Popcorn Stitch

a textured crochet stitch that creates raised, rounded clusters that stand out from the surface of your work.

Half Color Change in Crochet

a technique for introducing a new yarn color partway through a stitch to create two-tone stitches and unique color patterns.

Color Change in Crochet

a technique used to switch from one yarn color to another while keeping your stitches neat and secure.

Slip Stitch

a simple crochet stitch used to join, finish, move across a row, or create a neat, low-profile edge.

Increase in Crochet

a technique used to add stitches and gradually make your work wider.

Decrease in Crochet

a technique used to combine stitches and gradually make your work narrower.

Fasten Off in Crochet

the final step used to securely finish your work and prevent the stitches from coming undone.

Magic Ring/Circle

a crochet technique used to begin projects worked in the round with a tightly closed center.

Chain Stitch

the basic foundation of crochet, used to begin many projects and create spaces, shapes, and decorative details.

Single Crochet

one of the simplest and most versatile crochet stitches, creating a sturdy, closely woven fabric.

Half-Double Crochet

a versatile stitch that creates a fabric with more height and texture than single crochet while remaining fairly dense and flexible.

Triple Crochet

a tall, open crochet stitch that works up quickly and creates a lighter, more flexible fabric.

Double Crochet

a basic crochet stitch that works up quickly and creates a taller, flexible fabric.

Crochet: Projects

where simple stitches become something meaningful.

Create handmade gifts, decorations, keepsakes, and useful treasures while putting your skills to work and letting your creativity shine. Every project is another opportunity to make something with your own hands—and create something worth keeping or passing on.

Dish Scrubby

a simple handmade kitchen project that creates a reusable scrubber for washing dishes, pots, and pans.

About a decade before I started Wisdom Preserved I began writing and selling crochet patterns on Etsy.com as OvertonFancies. This was a wonderful endeavor that doesn't get as much of my attention as it used to but my patterns are still available if you are interested in purchasing them.
