How to Dehydrate Onions

Updated: 1 day ago

I love knowing how to dehydrate onions. Onions are one of those items that regularly go on sale. Being able to buy them when they are discounted and use them throughout the year is a great way to capitalize on the decreased pricing. In addition, cutting onions is an onerous affair. I would much rather cut a bunch of onions in one sitting and get it over with than do it multiple times throughout the year.

The first thing you want to do is cut the tops and bottoms off and peel the brown layer off the onions. Cut the onions into 1/4 inch slices. You can use a knife for this task but I highly recommend using a food processor since it goes faster. (Your eyes will thank you.)

Now, load the dehydrator trays with a layer of your sliced onions and start it at 145 degrees F. Your onions will be done when they are very dry to the touch. This can take anywhere from 12 to 36 hours depending on your dehydrator, how thick your onions are, etc.

Place dry onions in an airtight container in a cool dry place. When you are ready to use them, you can either rehydrate the onions or throw them in dry. Use them in any recipe you would normally use onions in.
