The Easiest Way to Clean Oven Racks

Updated: Jun 27

Dirty oven racks exist in many kitchens around the world, partially because they are hard to clean. What if I told you I know the easiest way to clean oven racks? This method I am going to share with you helps break down the greasy grime with next to no effort on your part.

Supplies:

Borax or other powdered laundry detergents (I also like Oxiclean)

Old Towels

The Easiest Way to Clean Your Oven Racks

Begin by laying your large sturdy trash bag out on the counter near your sink. Boil some water.

Place an old towel in the sink and soak it in the boiling water and then liberally sprinkle Borax (or other powdered laundry soap) onto the towel.

Place the towel flat into the trash bag on the counter before it cools. Be careful as the towel is extremely hot at this point.

Add your oven racks to the trash bag laying them flat on top of the towel.

Soak a second towel in boiling water and like the first add your powdered laundry detergent to the towel.

Place the towel on top with the racks sandwiched in-between. Make sure the wet soapy towels fully cover the racks.

Tie up your trash bag as tight as possible to create a sauna for the dirty oven racks. Let this sit for a minimum of 20 minutes. The longer the better. I do this while I am cleaning the oven. By the time I am done cleaning the oven my racks are ready to clean.

Using a sponge, scrub brush, steel wool, or other scouring pad wipe down your oven racks. The areas that were just covered with grease and grime should wipe down easily. There may be hard to remove burned-on areas that may take a little more elbow grease. So, scrub, scrub, scrub on those spots! I promise it will come clean.

Rinse your oven racks thoroughly with clean water.

Return the clean oven racks to your clean oven and enjoy your wonderful accomplishment.
