The Mittleider Gardening Course Book provides many “recipes” for custom garden soil. This custom potting soil mix provides good drainage and moisture control as well as a good base to add all the nutrients growing plants need. That is why I chose this to grow my seedlings in.
Potting Soil Supplies
10 cups sawdust
7 cups medium to coarse sand
3 cups perlite
5-gallon bucket
Directions
Begin making the potting soil by combining all the ingredients. Then mix with your hand or a large paddle. It will take 4 batches to fill the bucket. If you have a cement mixer you can quadruple the batch and mix it together there. Otherwise, it is too much to mix by hand.
For a quadruple batch to fill a 5-gallon bucket: 40 cups of sawdust, 28 cups of sand, and 12 cups of perlite.
It is now ready for you to add your nutrients and your seeds.
