DIY Cow Stanchion with Kick Board

I was honestly nervous before I brought home my first cow. Not because I didn’t want her, I absolutely did, but because I kept picturing one very specific disaster: a full bucket of fresh milk getting kicked and maybe myself as well.


If you’ve ever milked an animal, or even thought seriously about it, you know that fear makes sense. You’re sitting low, your hands are busy, the bucket is right where a nervous back foot can reach it, and the cow may or may not understand that you’re about to become her daily milking routine.


That’s why I built my stanchion with a kick board.


As it turns out, my cow has been wonderfully behaved. We’ve only had a few bucket tips in the past year of milking, and most days are calm and easy. But I still love having the stanchion. Just knowing the kick board is there if I need it gives me so much more confidence.


This build is not meant to be a one-size-fits-all plan. I attached my stanchion directly against my barn wall, so my exact dimensions may be different from what you need. Take the idea, look at your space, measure your animal, and adjust it so it works safely for both of you.


Why I wanted a stanchion with a kick board


A cow stanchion does a few jobs at once. It gives the cow a familiar place to stand, it keeps her head gently secured while she eats, and it gives you a safer place to milk.


The kick board is the extra piece that made me feel ready.


A kick board sits between her back legs and the milk bucket. It doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does need to be placed correctly. If it’s too low, too far back, or too far forward, it won’t do much good. If it’s awkward or uncomfortable, your cow may resist using the stanchion at all.


For me, the goal was simple:


  • Give my cow a steady platform to stand on

  • Create a head catch that opened and closed easily

  • Add a removable kick board for the days I wanted extra security

  • Build it into the barn wall I already had

  • Use reclaimed lumber where I could


I didn’t want something fancy. I wanted something solid, practical, and forgiving.


And honestly, that’s still what I’d recommend. A milking setup doesn’t need to look perfect. It needs to be safe, sturdy, and easy enough to use every day.


Start by building around your own barn and cow


The biggest thing to keep in mind is that your setup will probably be a little different from mine. If you want the actual measurements of mine, watch the video above. Otherwise, these are some good guidelines.


My stanchion is attached directly against the wall of my barn. That gave me a strong side to build from, but it also meant my measurements depended on the wall, the roof framing, the stall entrance, and the layout I already had.


If you’re building one freestanding, your post placement and bracing will look different. If your cow is larger or smaller than mine, your kick board location will be different too. A Jersey, a Dexter, and a big Holstein are not going to fit the same setup in the same way.


Before cutting lumber, spend a little time watching how your cow naturally stands. If you don’t have your cow yet, build with adjustability in mind.


A few things to think through before you start:


  • How wide does the platform need to be for her to stand comfortably?

  • Where will the feed pan or grain bucket go?

  • Which side will you milk from?

  • Where does her back leg reach when she shifts weight?

  • Can you safely get in and out of the milking area?

  • Will the floor feel solid under her feet?

  • Can you clean around it easily?


That last part matters more than you might think. Milking is an everyday chore, and anything that traps manure, spilled grain, or bedding will get old fast.


For this DIY cow stanchion build with kick board for safer milking, I cared more about function than looks. Since I used reclaimed lumber, some boards were different colors and ages. A tinted weather sealer helped pull it all together at the end, but during the build I stayed focused on strength first.


Build the frame so it has real support

I started by building up a strong place on the barn wall where the stanchion could attach. Since I was using the existing barn structure, I wanted that wall connection to be solid before adding anything else.

From there, I attached vertical posts from ground level up to the roof framing. These posts became the main structure for the stanchion.

On the side of the stanchion that sat more toward the middle of the stall, I used a notched 2x6. The notch allowed the board to tie into the roof framing. On the entrance side, I used a 4x4 because that area needed more strength. I made that post long enough to set it into the ground with concrete and attach it at the roof line.

That post did a lot of work. It helped support the entrance side, kept the structure solid, and gave me confidence that the stanchion wouldn’t wobble when my cow stepped in or leaned against it.

Once the vertical supports were in, I added a spacer board above the stanchion entrance. That helped keep everything square. It’s easy for a project like this to slowly twist or lean as you add boards, especially if you’re working with reclaimed lumber.

I also added a few extra braces while building. Some of them made construction easier, and some added stability. When you’re working around livestock, a little extra bracing is rarely a bad thing.

A stanchion doesn’t have to be pretty, but it does need to feel boringly solid. If it moves, rattles, or flexes too much, your cow will notice.

After the posts were set, I built a box at the bottom and attached it to the posts. This box became the base for the platform, or deck, where the cow stands.


Think of this lower box as the foundation of the milking area. It needs to be strong enough to hold the cow’s weight, flat enough that she feels secure, and open enough that you can build the rest of the stanchion around it.


Create the head catch before closing everything in


The front head catch was the part I had to think through carefully, because the order of assembly matters.

I placed a board on the stall side at about waist level. Then I connected the two front posts with another board at about knee height and one more around head height.

The top area needed to form a pocket for the movable piece that would hold the cow’s head.

That meant those boards had to go in before everything else blocked access. If I had waited too long, I wouldn’t have been able to fit them into place.

At first, my pocket felt a little too loose. The movable head restraint had too much play in it. To fix that, I added another board inside the pocket to make the fit closer.


You don’t want the head catch so tight that it binds or becomes hard to move. But you also don’t want it so loose that it flops around. It should swing smoothly and feel controlled.

Once the pocket was ready, I drilled holes in the head end of the lower box and in the bottom of the movable restraining boards. Then I joined them with carriage bolts.


The key here was to leave the bolts loose enough for movement. If you tighten everything down too hard, the boards can’t pivot properly. The movable piece needs to open so the cow can put her head through, then close enough to hold her in place while she eats and you milk.


Add the kick board setup where it actually helps

After the head catch was working, I added boards along the sides to hold the kick board.


This is where measuring your cow matters most.

The kick board needs to sit where it blocks the motion of the back leg without being in the way of the bucket or her leg while she is standing normally. Since every cow is built a little differently, don’t just copy someone else’s placement without checking your animal.


If your cow is already home, bring her into the space if you can do so safely. Have someone help. Look at where her belly, udder, and back leg are in relation to the frame. Watch where her leg would move if she kicked forward.


That gives you a much better sense of where your kick board supports should go.


I built mine so the kick board could be put in when needed and removed when not needed. That was important to me. Since my cow is usually calm, I don’t always need to use it. But if she’s feeling fresh, irritated by flies, or just having one of those days, I can slide the board in and milk with less worry.


A removable kick board also makes the stanchion more flexible. If I ever need to make adjustments, I can. And because I left the deck boards loose near the kick board area, I can pry them up later if I need to change the placement.


That one choice made the build feel much less permanent in a good way.


Deck the platform with cow confidence in mind

Once the frame and kick board supports were in place, I added boards across the lower box to create the deck.


This part seems simple, but it matters a lot. A cow can be surprisingly suspicious of flooring. If there are big gaps between boards, she may not want to step onto it. Those gaps can look unsafe to her, and they can also catch hooves or create uneven footing.


So I kept the deck boards close together and I placed bricks undoer the perimeter of the box since we have sand soil.


You don’t want a platform that feels like a shaky bridge. You want it to feel like normal, secure ground. If your cow is new to the stanchion, sprinkle a little feed where you want her to step and let her explore without pressure. A calm first experience makes the next one easier.


Here’s what I watched for while decking the platform:


  • Boards that rocked under weight

  • Gaps large enough to make a hoof catch

  • Splinters or rough edges

  • Screws or nails that weren’t fully seated

  • Spots that would be hard to clean

  • Areas around the kick board that might need future adjustment


I fastened most of the deck securely, but near the kick board supports I kept things easier to remove. That way, if I need to adjust the kick board later, I won’t have to tear apart the whole platform.


That’s one of the best lessons from this project: build sturdy, but leave room for real life.


Animals grow, routines change, and the first placement isn’t always the final placement.


Make the locking board and finish the stanchion


The last building pieces were the kick board itself and the top locking board for the head catch.

The locking board keeps the movable head restraint in place once the cow is standing with her head through the opening. You want the system to be secure, but also simple to release. Never build a setup that leaves you fumbling if you need to let the cow out quickly.


When you test it, walk through the whole process before bringing the cow in:


  1. Open the head catch.

  2. Make sure the feed is ready.

  3. Let the cow step in and put her head through.

  4. Close and lock the head catch.

  5. Place the kick board if you’re using it.

  6. Sit where you’ll milk and make sure you have room.

  7. Remove the kick board.

  8. Unlock the head catch and let her back out.


Doing a dry run helps you catch awkward spots. Maybe the lock is too high. Maybe the kick board is hard to slide in. Maybe the bucket doesn’t sit where you thought it would. It’s much easier to fix those things before you’re working around a full-size cow.

After the build was done, I treated the stanchion with Thompson’s WaterSeal. Mine had a bit of color in it, which worked well because I used reclaimed lumber and the boards didn’t all match. The finish helped even out the look and gave the wood some protection.


Use whatever livestock-safe finish makes sense for your barn and climate. Let it dry fully before putting your cow in the stanchion, and make sure there are no strong fumes or sticky spots left behind.


What I’d keep in mind if I built it again

After using this stanchion for a year of milking, I’m still glad I built it this way.


My cow has been better behaved than I feared, which is such a gift. Most days, milking is peaceful. She eats, I milk, and we both go on with our morning. But the kick board still gives me peace of mind.


If I were giving advice to someone building a stanchion for the first time, I’d say this:


Measure your cow, not just your lumber. The animal determines the layout.


Build stronger than you think you need. Cows are big, and even a gentle cow can lean, shift, or bump into things.


Avoid big gaps in the deck. A nervous cow may refuse to step onto flooring that looks strange or unsafe.


Keep the kick board adjustable if you can. You may need to move it after using the stanchion a few times.


Check every surface by hand. If it can poke, scrape, pinch, or catch hair, fix it.


Make the release simple. You should be able to let your cow out quickly without fighting the stanchion.


The best part is that the stanchion helped me relax. Before I had my cow, I worried so much about the bucket getting kicked over. Now I know I have a setup that works for us. If I need the kick board, I can put it in. If I don’t, it stays out of the way.


And because of that, milking feels less stressful and more like the daily rhythm I hoped it would become.


If you’re building your own, don’t feel like you have to copy every cut or measurement exactly. Use the structure as a starting point, then make it fit your barn, your cow, and the way you milk. A good stanchion is the one that helps you and your animal feel steady, safe, and ready for the routine.
